This is basically a pointless post because a few months ago I did an audit of the TBR stack and discovered dozens and dozens of books that I had failed to include on my spreadsheet. No idea how I missed them… anyway, the current total on the spreadsheet is 448, a big jump from the number that I thought I began 2024 with, which was 346 (plus book buying was what you might call ‘unrestrained’ for a few months there…).
At least I’ve lots to choose from as I start selecting my holiday reading and books suitable for 2025 reading challenges.
How’s your stack looking?
I’m not answering that question!
I’m not counting but I have become more restrained than I was. No idea how that happened but I’m enjoying it for now. I’m sure you have some gems to look forward to in the 448.
My stack is more like stack(s) and I don’t even want to know the count, lol.
My stack is ridiculous. Hope there are lots of gems in the 448!
I KNOW there will be lots of gems!
I have so many unread piles that my sisters said I could make one of those Christmas trees in several rooms!

😀 You can never have too many of those book Christmas trees! 😉
I couldn’t possibly answer that question but it’s likely to be a LOT more than 448. 🤭
I only documented mine so I had a searchable list to assist with reading challenges/ checking if I already owned particular books (I had a couple of instances of buying the same book twice!). In the same way I did an audit and added to the list this year, I might do an audit next year of the books that I’ve had for eons and decide if I’m ever going to actually read them…
I had one of those when I repatriated in 2019. There were just 20 books on it 🤯
I’ve been hovering around 250 for the last few years. It’s a constant tussle between wanting to buy more books but knowing I don’t have the space for them. So now I try and use the library more
Space – always the issue for book lovers! I rarely keep hard cover books these days. Every so often I’ve loved something enough to keep on my shelves but mostly, once I’ve read something I pass it on and say ‘no need to return it!’.
I used to keep books I thought I might re-read but when I came to look at them again I’d gone off the idea. So now the majority of mine just get passed on just as you do.
My TBR consists of physical books – mostly second hand – perhaps 100 unread and hundreds deserving of a re-read; and my Audible account which has 30 or 40 books, let’s say 400 hours worth, purchased and unread (plus 24 credits for the year ahead).
They exert no pressure, but are there for when I need them.
I have an Audible subscription and keep meaning to stop or suspend it because nearly everything I want to listen to is available for free via Borrowbox or Libby (I am a member of four libraries, so end up with lots of choice and availability). I haven’t counted Audible books in my tally, so probably need to add another 10-15! What I do like on Audible is the fact that you can get books in other languages – my German is not good enough to understand a complex text but I like to listen to stories in German to go to sleep to 😀
I tend to end up around 200 books at the end of every year. Even if I have read around 50 from the shelves. I don’t really know how this is possible. This year I read 43 books from my shelves, and I ended up with 211 books, still there to read.
It’s an absolute mystery, isn’t it? 😀

Yeah, well, I just bought ten books, eight in a box set and one to get free postage on the ninth …
Too scared to count!
I like your numbering scheme, though. What comes after eleventy-hundred? I guess eleventy-hundred and one.
