Six Degrees of Separation – from The Narrow Road to the Deep North to Laurinda

It’s time again for my favourite meme. Based on the concept of six degrees of separation, Emma Chapman and Annabel Smith have created #6DEGREES, where bloggers share links between books in six moves. Check out the rules if you want to play along.

This month the chain starts with the 2014 Booker winner, Richard Flanagan’s The Narrow Road to the Deep North. I haven’t read it (yet) but it sits alongside a bunch of other books on a list that I compiled of the books that appear most frequently on all of the Best Books of 2014 lists. Another book on that list that I plan to read is Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi. Continue reading

My TBR Stack – You Decide

top-ten-tbr

I wasn’t going to participate in Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by The Broke and the Bookish) this week simply because talking about what books are at the top of my TBR list is ludicrous given this…. The situation is made all the more ridiculous by the fact that I have 40-something unread ARCs in my NetGalley queue and let’s not even get started on the ‘virtual’ TBR stack on my Kindle.

But then I read Bookshelf Fantasies ace post on choosing vacation reading – there was a poll! I loved it! I voted! I stole Lisa’s idea! Here it is!

Please vote – it will decide the order of (some) of my TBR stack.

Note that it may not be the freshest, shiniest bunch of new releases but all of the books I’ve listed have been sitting on my shelf since last year and all qualify for my Off the Shelf reading challenge… And if I complete this challenge I’ll feel justified in spending up big on new books at the end of the year. Yay!

Top Ten Tuesday – Books I HAD To Buy…But Are Still Sitting On My Shelf Unread

top-ten-row-1

I need a ‘pause’ button.

I read great reviews (thanks fellow bloggers) and then hit Amazon and moments later I have the book on my Kindle. Such is the joy (and the agony in terms of my wallet) of online shopping.

I have tempered my impulse buying somewhat. Somewhat…

I use ‘wishlists’, Kindle samples and the ‘Want to Read’ feature on Goodreads as a way of reminding me of books that look like my kind of thing. But still, sometimes the need is too great. And I wish I could hit ‘pause’ instead of ‘Add to Shopping Cart’.

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday topic, hosted by The Broke and the Bookish is the Top Ten Books I HAD To Buy…But Are Still Sitting On My Shelf Unread. Here are the books that bypassed my wishlists, samples and want-to-read lists and instead were bought immediately. Because I couldn’t wait. And yet, they haven’t even been opened…. Continue reading

Reading stack confessions…

The latest Readings newsletter arrived in my letterbox this week. I dare not open it because I know I’ll find reviews and snippets about all sorts of good books that I haven’t yet read.

My pile of books waiting to be read (both physical and ‘virtual’) is embarrassingly huge. In fact, if I didn’t buy another book for two years, I would probably have enough to read. I keep making vague pledges to stop adding to the stack but then I read about a new book – for example Novel Girl’s interview with author Eowyn Ivey about her debut novel, The Snow Child – and my resolution disappears.

So here are the hard facts about my reading stack – 144 titles sitting on my Kindle (*blush*) and 47 unread books on the shelf (*blushes again*). That’s actually about three years worth of reading. Lordy.

What’s ahead? Well The Snow Child of course, The Freudian Slip by Marion von Adlerstein, A Common Loss by Kirsten Tranter, 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami and I’ll probably cave and read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – those and 186 other books!
