The 2024 Stella Prize is announced tomorrow.
The 2024 shortlist is:
- The Swift Dark Tide by Katia Ariel (Gazebo Books)
- Body Friend by Katherine Brabon (Ultimo Press)
- Feast by Emily O’Grady (Allen & Unwin)
- Hospital by Sanya Rushdi, translated by Arunava Sinha (Giramondo Publishing)
- Abandon Every Hope: Essays for the Dead by Hayley Singer (Upswell Publishing)
- Praiseworthy by Alexis Wright (Giramondo Publishing)
I haven’t read all of the books but that’s not going to stop me making a prediction (note that my predictions are usually the kiss-of-death).
Anyway, I’m only halfway through it but I reckon the winner is Katia Ariel’s memoir, The Swift Dark Tide. The writing is beautiful and the ideas that Ariel explores are thought-provoking and challenging. Plus, it’s time for a winner from my favourite genre (memoir)!
What’s your tip?
I’m not brave enough to make predictions when I haven’t read any of them, except to exclude previous winners, so I think not Praiseworthy. (Which I did try to read, but gave up.)
Agree it would be bold to give the Prize to Wright again. I borrowed Praiseworthy from the library but didn’t start it – too big given the amount of time I had to read it.
Wild stab in dark… because I haven’t read any of these… but I reckon Praiseworthy will win it.

The way the book is being talked about in New York and London, i just *had a feeling* about it. Can I also make a prediction: Alexis Wright is going to win the Nobel Prize for Lit this year!
