Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye. This week, all are books that have just hit the shelves.
Griefdogg by Michael Winkler
Why I have it: Because it sounds so strange… (also – about a hydrologist and grief? It’s made for me!).
Summary: Jeffrey – hydrologist, husband, father, model citizen of Mildura. After inheriting a small fortune from an obscure aunt, Jeffrey has an existential crisis and decides to live as if he were the family pet, sleeping through the day or wandering beside the river. He discovers he can sense secret grief in others – what to do with this gift?
I’m thinking: Yes.
Sororicidal by Edwina Preston
Why I have it: Can’t resist a complex relationship story.
Summary: The bond between sisters Mary and Margot is undeniable, but so too is the damage it inflicts – intimacy curdles into enmity, tenderness slips into cruelty. As the sisters age, their lives diverge, but they remain tightly bound. Mary pursues her ambitions as an artist and is swept into a bohemian world, Margot moves toward the conventional securities of marriage and motherhood. Their relationship is tested repeatedly, yet neither escapes the gravitational pull of the other.
I’m thinking: Yes.
The News From Dublin by Colm Tóibín
Why I have it: Tóibín is ever-reliable.
Summary: A collection of nine short stories about the complexities of family, longing, loss, and love.
