Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.
A Beautiful Loan by Mary Costello
Why I have it: Because of Lisa’s review.
Summary: Dublin, 1985: 19yo Anna Hughes is infatuated with an older man, Peter Gallagher. Her obsessive longing for him leads to marriage and, eventually, a crushing betrayal. Years later, Anna meets a kindhearted Algerian man, who offers a different kind of love.
I’m thinking: Yes.
The Body Builders by Albertine Clarke
Why I have it: Because of the swimming pool cover.
Summary: Ada lives a solitary life. She spends her days in her apartment building’s swimming pool, and occasionally visiting with friends. When she meets a man named Atticus by the pool, Ada immediately feels an intimate connection between them. Little by little, Ada’s estrangement from her familiar surroundings and from reality widens and she finds herself in a new, artificial environment, one that a mysterious otherworldly force has designed for her.
I’m thinking: Yes.
Go Gentle by Maria Semple
Why I have it: Because I enjoyed Where’d You Go, Bernadette.
Summary: Adora Hazzard has it all figured out. A Stoic philosopher and divorcée, she has discovered that the secret to happiness is to desire only what you have – and she’s applied this insight to blissful effect. Her carefully curated life is humming along brilliantly until a chance meeting with a handsome stranger, when her ordered world is upended.
I’m thinking: Yes.
All sound very promising! I definitely want to read the Costello.
I wasn’t aware the Maria Semple had another book out. Of course, I wasn’t paying attention, so she could have had 10 new books out by now!
The Costello would get my vote
I loved Where’d you go Bernadette? but then haven’t given this author a second thought since. Maybe I should give this one a go too.
I’ve only read Bernadette as well – not even aware of other books but this one sounds fun.
A loved Where’d You Go, Bernadette, so Go Gentle appeals.
