Despite a slow start to the #20BooksofSummer reading challenge, I cruised over the September 1 finish line (21.5 books read and three audios).
My selections were a mix of fiction and nonfiction (including a biography and some memoirs).
Two books that I really enjoyed (and perhaps it was a case of right book at the right time) were Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke and I Love the Whole World! by Victoria Hannan. I’ve since pushed both onto friends 🙂
There were a couple in the mix that I’ll be thinking about for a while – Air by Christian Kracht (because it was a mad ride) and Death of an Ordinary Man by Sarah Perry (because it had all the ingredients for I book that I ought to have loved but was one that I found problematic for many reasons).
The two absolute standouts were London Falling by Patrick Radden Keefe and John of John by Douglas Stuart – both will be in my favourites at the end of the year.

Keep hearing about Yesteryear, so I looked on my list to see if it was there. It was!
It’s not that it is brilliantly or beautifully written, it’s that some of the plot twists and themes are great to discuss.

I looked at the pile of Yesteryear hardbacks in Waterstone’s the other day. It is in its 12th impression already!
