Years ago, I saw a play performed by Melbourne Theatre Company called Home, I’m Darling. It begins with a 1950s couple – him returning from a tiring day at work, her waiting with his slippers and the newspaper. Except that it’s not the 1950s. It’s a ‘modern’ couple who play at husband and wife from the fifties. Was life ‘better’ then, when roles and expectations were clearly defined? This is what the play examined, as the couples’ life butted against that of their ‘modern’ friends.

01. Melbourne Theatre Company’s 37 – is it too early to declare my favourite play for the year? It will be hard to beat. They managed to create so many distinct characters in such a short space of time; examine big themes (racism; sense of community; loyalty); and the highlight, the choregraphy, that drew on a game of footy and Indigenous dance. Really impressive.

If you’ve not heard of Prima Facie I’ll assume you’re not into theatre. It’s the novelisation of Suzie Miller’s play by the same name. The play won a swag of awards, and was also turned into a National Theatre Live film. All the praise is warranted – it’s extraordinary. Continue reading
