Sample Saturday – memoirs

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

More by Molly Roden Winter

Why I have it: Spotted on NYT’s Read Like the Wind newsletter.

Summary: Winter, mum of two young children, and wife to Stewart: one night, when Stewart missed the kids’ bedtime (again), she stormed out of the house to clear her head. At impromptu drinks with a friend, she met Matt, an attractive younger man. When Molly told her husband that Matt had asked her out, she was surprised that he encouraged her to accept. So begins Molly’s unexpected open marriage. Molly and Stewart set ground rules… which they end up breaking.

I’m thinking: Yes.

Thunderstone by Nancy Campbell

Why I have it: because of Beck’s review.

Summary: In the wake of a traumatic lockdown, Campbell buys an old caravan and drives it into a strip of neglected woodland. It is the first home she has ever owned. As summer begins, Nancy embraces the challenge of how to live well in a space in which possessions and emotions often threaten to tumble. But when illness and uncertainty loom once more, it is this van anchored in the woods, and the unconventional friendships forged off -grid, that will bring her solace.

I’m thinking: Maybe.

Careless People by Sarah Wynn Williams

Why I have it: One of those buzzy books I keep seeing around.

Summary: From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, Williams gives her account of working at Facebook, exposing both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold.

I’m thinking: Yes.

  1. I rushed out and bought Careless People when it was first published because there were rumours it was going to be banned/pulped as Meta was so pissed off about it. Alas, it’s still sitting in my TBR.
