It’s time for #6degrees. Start at the same place as other wonderful readers, add six books, and see where you end up.
This month we begin with The Anniversary by Stephanie Bishop, a story that examines the relationship between a creative ‘power couple’.
There are quite a few real-life literary power couples, but I’m picking Paul Auster and Siri Hustvedt. I recently finished Hustvedt’s memoir The Shaking Woman.
Hustvedt investigates her ‘unexplained’ seizures, as does Katerina Bryant in her memoir, Hysteria.
Jacinta Parsons explores the gendered health system and the labeling of women as ‘hysterical’ in her book, Unseen.
In Unseen, Parsons discusses her experience of chronic illness and her autoimmune condition – Katherine Brabon does similar in her novel, Body Friend.
In Body Friend, the main character relies on hydrotherapy as part of her recovery, as does the main character in Everyone and Everything by Nadine J. Cohen.
Cohen examines grief a Jewish perspective, as does Natasha Sholl in her extraordinary memoir, Found, Wanting.

Next month (June 1, 2024), we’ll start with a crime novel with difference – Butter by Asako Yuzuki.
Great chain as always Kate … you have a few health conditions in yours, while I have a few animals linking mine! Here ‘tis: https://whisperinggums.com/2024/05/04/six-degrees-of-separation-from-the-anniversary-to/
A Japanese crime novel next? I’ve read one memorable one, but before blogging.
Me? a-hem, I had another rant about clichéd covers:

looking at these chains always leaves me with a humungous number of books to add to my TBR… Starting with the ones on your chain today.. Mine is here – https://www.ladyinreadwrites.com/zoom-into-the-zippy-world-of-zealous-zillennials-and-zhar-ptistas/
Oops.. wrong link – mine is here – https://www.ladyinreadwrites.com/from-one-anniversary-to-the-next-through-earth-and-water/
A fascinating chain – I’m drawn to The Shaking Woman.
This one had me totally stumped, so I went a cheeky way (as Whispering Gums called it)!
Oh… here it is: https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2024/05/04/tcls-6degrees-of-separation-for-may-4-2024/
Really enjoyed The Anniversary, a comparitively rare example of an Australian novel that made it over here! Here’s my chain: https://alifeinbooks.co.uk/2024/05/six-degrees-of-separation-the-anniversary-to-potterism/
I love how everyone’s chains head off in a different direction! Mine were all linked by weddings and anniversaries.

Did you see that Paul Auster died this week? When I was a sales rep for Penguin, he never sold as well as we hoped he would, although booksellers were always supportive. https://www.npr.org/2024/05/01/1212212960/paul-auster-dead
My chain meandered, mostly connected by murder:

Wow! What a great approach to the chain–power couples! Here’s mine: https://hopewellslibraryoflife.wordpress.com/2024/05/04/six-degrees-of-separation-the-anniversary-by-stephanie-bishop/
More books for me to read! Here’s mine: https://tasmanianbibliophileatlarge.wordpress.com/2024/05/04/6-degrees-of-separation-from-the-anniversary-by-stephanie-bishop-to-romulus-my-father-by-raimond-gaita/
All new to me titles here but both Hysteria and The Shaking Woman do sound worth exploring as does Found Wanting–all probably emotionally wrenching in their own ways.
These are all new to me, but all sound very interesting.

I couldn’t resist a Paul Auster link either, but in a different position. It’s always hard starting from a book I haven’t read, so I went back to read your review of The Anniversary and it sounds rather fascinating, more than the average domestic thriller.
I haven’t read any of the books you listed but that’s always the beauty of it, finding new literature. Thanks for that.
My Six Degrees of Separation ended with Driving by Moonlight.
What a fascinating chain. I want to read all the books on it.
Here is my list where I end on a question mark. Check out why.
