Six Degrees of Separation – from The Anniversary to Found, Wanting

It’s time for #6degrees. Start at the same place as other wonderful readers, add six books, and see where you end up.

This month we begin with The Anniversary by Stephanie Bishop, a story that examines the relationship between a creative ‘power couple’.

There are quite a few real-life literary power couples, but I’m picking Paul Auster and Siri Hustvedt. I recently finished Hustvedt’s memoir The Shaking Woman.

Hustvedt investigates her ‘unexplained’ seizures, as does Katerina Bryant in her memoir, Hysteria.

Jacinta Parsons explores the gendered health system and the labeling of women as ‘hysterical’ in her book, Unseen.

In Unseen, Parsons discusses her experience of chronic illness and her autoimmune condition – Katherine Brabon does similar in her novel, Body Friend.

In Body Friend, the main character relies on hydrotherapy as part of her recovery, as does the main character in Everyone and Everything by Nadine J. Cohen.

Cohen examines grief a Jewish perspective, as does Natasha Sholl in her extraordinary memoir, Found, Wanting.

Next month (June 1, 2024), we’ll start with a crime novel with difference – Butter by Asako Yuzuki.

  3. I couldn’t resist a Paul Auster link either, but in a different position. It’s always hard starting from a book I haven’t read, so I went back to read your review of The Anniversary and it sounds rather fascinating, more than the average domestic thriller.
