It’s time for #6degrees. Start at the same place as other wonderful readers, add six books, and see where you end up.
This month we begin with a travel guide. I selected Lonely Planet’s The Joy of Wild Swimming.
You can’t swim without water, so that leads me to Water by John Boyne.
I had hoped to get to Water during Reading Ireland Month but didn’t (will save it for Novella November). I did read The Bee Sting by Paul Murray though.
Paul Murray will be appearing at the Melbourne Writers Festival this year. I am absolutely devo that I’m missing the Festival (away the whole week). It means that I’m also missing Leslie Jamison speaking about her new memoir, Splinters.
Jamison examines her own marriage, and that of her parents. Kate Legge does something similar in Infidelity and Other Affairs.
When I think of stories about affairs, I think The Life and Loves of a She Devil by Fay Weldon.
Final link is based on names – The Life and Loves of Lena Gaunt by Tracy Farr (I’ve had this book in my TBR stack for years!).
Where will other chains go? Link up below or post your link in the comments section.
Next month (May 4, 2024), we’ll start with a novel longlisted for the 2024 Stella Prize – The Anniversary by Stephanie Bishop.
Haha, good starting book Kate … must read Boyne.
Anyhow here is mine, from rainy Rutherglen: https://whisperinggums.com/2024/04/06/six-degrees-of-separation-from-rough-guide-to-japan-to/
Ha ha, that reference to ‘wild swimming’ reminds me of an episode of Vera, you be careful, eh?!
Anyway, here’s mine:

This was such a great starting point for our chain, Kate, and you have gone off as ever, in interesting directions. Here’s mine: https://margaret21.com/2024/04/06/six-degrees-of-separation-from-india-to-the-arctic/

I started off with travel and ended up with politics. Sigh.

I think I’ve added to the Linky but just in case, here’s mine: https://portobellobookblog.com/2024/04/06/6degrees-of-separation-april-2024-from-the-rough-guide-to-france-to-summer-at-the-french-cafe/

I love the idea of starting with a travel book! The Joy of Swimming looks like a nice one. When you had Tom Lake as the starting point, I considered doing a full water related chain, but never got to that.

I really enjoyed doing this one, and I’m a bit proud of myself on how I did it! I traveled WITH the author and found books that took place in locations she visited on her trip!

Great chain as ever, and I can recommend the Gaunt, one of two novels I read about the theremin within a few months of each other, oddly. Here’s my chain: https://alifeinbooks.co.uk/2024/04/six-degrees-of-separation-lonely-planet-guide-to-budapest-and-hungary-to-the-plot/

All new to me reads on your chain but I do hope to get to Boyne at some point
Here’s my chain https://notatnikemigrantki.home.blog/2024/04/06/six-degrees-of-separation-from-epic-drives-to-atlas-obscura/
I loved Water and have the second book in the series, Earth, on the TBR. Here’s my chain:

I was pleased that first, someone asked me for sightseeing advice last week so I consulted a travel book, then I was able to answer the question Davida asks, how does the sixth link relate to the starting point -https://perfectretort.blogspot.com/2024/04/six-degrees-of-separation-from-frommers.html
I haven’t read any, but it’s a fun chain!

I like your chain, the way you link your books, such a great idea.
My Six Degrees of Separation started with Brussels and ended with An Unexpected Light.
Mine are here – https://mybecky.blog/2024/04/06/six-degrees-of-separation-from-travels-in-siberia-to-the-fire-next-time/
I read The Bee Sting and I probably should read Water (Boyne) but I already said I’d get to The Fire Next Time – which I listed in my 6 Degrees but haven’t read.
Nice work–I’ll have to look for your starting book for my Mom who loves swimming.

Relatively early by my standards (I usually post AFTER the weekend, because I always do it last minute, apologies). But I can see that everybody else got there ahead of me. I’m rather tempted by those marriage memoirs, Splinters and Infidelity and Other Affairs. Now that I’m far enough removed from that situation.
From Hawai’i to Florida…
