Things That Are Making Me Happy This Week

01. Started the week with a visit to Aurora Bathhouse in Sorrento – it was so good. Hard to say which bits I liked best but the salt scrub; cold plunge pool; mineral pool with tonnes of room to float; and the glacial mist room were all outstanding.

02. Post Bathhouse lunch, and a walk along the pier for some more salty air.

03. This week’s Melbourne International Film Festival selections:

  • How to Have Sex – harrowing but compelling.
  • Ama Gloria – this movie… it was everything. Simple story with big themes. The little girl who plays Cléo was beyond amazing – she made me bawl. And the use of artwork and animation was so clever. My pick of the Festival.

04. ‘Attended’ the Edinburgh International Book Festival this week (by attended, I mean I lay in bed with the ipad, streaming a session in the wee hours). Saw Cariad Lloyd speaking about her experience of grief in Lessons From Loss – Lloyd is funny and honest, and it was a great session.

05. A night time stroll through Docklands for the Now or Never Art Trail. My favourite piece was titled Of Sky and Sea by Michaela Gleave, described as –

Using the discontinued maritime language of Morse code signal lights, Michaela Gleave’s Of Sky and Sea takes the form of a spectacular large-scale light installation in the middle of the Docklands Harbour, beaming a list of extinct and endangered languages into the night sky…

06. Also part of Now or Never, the Neversphere – a huge domed cinema featuring immersive art films – the screen totally fills your range of vision. We saw the Jess Johnson and Simon Ward piece titled XYZZY – loved it, and tempted to see other films they’re showing.

07. It’s not about winning or losing… but happy that my daughter’s team won their grand final today. I think it will be her last season, so I felt a little sentimental as they gathered to sing the club song (as a family, we’ve been involved with the club for 14 years – end of an era).
