Dear Blogging Friends (and anyone else who is reading this post),
I have many thoughts about Heather Rose’s memoir, Nothing Bad Ever Happens Here but they are thoughts best shared in person, should we ever meet for a bookish chat. There might be some debate involved…
Sincerely,
Kate
Oh… are the thoughts positive or negative? I love Heather Rose but I’m just not remotely interested in this book…
Of the negative variety… and they sit uncomfortably alongside all the praise I had for Museum of Modern Love.
That’s kinda why I can’t bring myself to read this, as I adored Museum of Modern Love.
Oh me too! I loved Museum of Modern Love but now question all of my praise after reading this memoir (I listened to the audio book and didn’t finish it because…well…)
It seems odd that Museum was such an insightful book and this memoir…. well, the complete opposite.
We all seem to be of like mind. I loved Museum of Modern Love, had some doubts about the depictions of China in Bruny, but this one… nup.
I haven’t read it, and I’m not going to, but from what I’ve heard it’s probably put me off reading her altogether.
I didn’t read Bruny (I had been warned off it because of the issue you identified).
There was one major theme in this book that I found so deeply problematic that I don’t think I’ll be reading any more Rose.
The one mentioned here: https://theconversation.com/heather-rose-writes-with-raw-beauty-about-trauma-and-hardcore-spiritual-work-so-why-does-it-leave-me-cold-195425
Intriguing! Big fan of Museum of Modern Love which I have you to thank for.
Museum was a clever and exceptional story on so many levels. This ‘memoir’ feels like fiction in some parts.
You had me intrigued so I’ve been down a rabbit hole of reviews. It sounds intense. I loved MOML (and was so keen to read it from your review that I ordered it from Readings rather than wait for the UK release.) Think I’ll be avoiding this one though.
There’s a one-star review on Goodreads that captures all of the issues – https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5518915142?book_show_action=false
This sounds hugely problematic. I won’t be reading it. Thank you for the link – very helpful!
PS Feel free to delete that link if you’d rather not direct people to that review…
No, it will save people time to have links to the issues 😉
Intriguing!
