It’s time for #6degrees. Start at the same place as other wonderful readers, add six books, and see where you end up.
This month we begin with The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki.
I haven’t read it but the blurb, and its mention of inanimate objects, immediately reminded me of The Things She Owned by Katherine Tamiko Arguile – haven’t read that one either but clearly I ought to because its blurb has stuck in my mind.
Arguile’s book focuses on a woman working in London. I’ve just finished another book about a woman in London – Young Women by Jessica Moor.
Moor makes multiple references to Nora Ephron, as does Kimberley Allsopp in Love and Other Puzzles.
The main character in Allsopp’s novel writes crossword puzzles, which links to a nonfiction book about crosswords, Thinking Inside the Box by Adrienne Raphel.
Based on the title, my next link is to Jennifer Egan’s experimental ‘Twitter fiction’, Black Box.
Egan’s main character is a young female spy, so my final link is to Sweet Tooth by Ian McEwan.
Objects, crosswords and spies – not what I expected! Where will other chains go? Link up below or post your link in the comments section.
Next month (September 3, 2022), we’ll start with the book you finished with this month (and if you haven’t done an August chain, start with the last book you read).
Fun, thanks for hosting! My link took me to Bruce Chatwin’s The Songlines: https://thoughtsonpapyrus.com/2022/08/06/six-degrees-of-separation-from-ruth-ozekis-the-book-of-form-and-emptiness-to-bruce-chatwins-the-songlines/
Woo hoo, at least I will have read next month’s book. I haven’t read any of yours this month, which is a bit unusual I think. I had planned to read that McEwan but didn’t.
I took a while with mine this month to go from my second link to my third … and it probably shows … but I got there! Here it is: https://whisperinggums.com/2022/08/06/six-degrees-of-separation-from-the-book-of-form-and-emptiness-to/
Interesting chain. I admit–I forgot! My chain likely shows it, too.
I haven’t read any of yours either!
Here’s mine: https://anzlitlovers.com/2022/08/06/six-degrees-of-separation-from-the-book-of-form-and-emptiness-to/
Sorry – I entered the wrong link first! This is the correct link – https://booksplease.org/2022/08/06/six-degrees-of-separation-from-the-book-of-form-and-emptiness-to/
I have read one of your books – Sweet Tooth!
Nope, I haven’t read anything from your chain either, and I found it quite hard to get going as well. But here it is: https://margaret21.com/2022/08/06/six-degrees-of-separation-from-form-and-emptiness-to-a-pink-rabbit/
I like the idea of inanimate objects being your first point of connect; here’s mine: https://potpourri2015.wordpress.com/2022/08/06/six-degrees-of-separation-from-the-book-of-form-and-emptiness-to-lost-horizon/
And I’m adding the Crossword book to my TBR–love doing crosswords so anything about them should be fun
Your chains always seem so effortless! Great choice of starting book this month! My chain:
https://stargazer-online.com/2022/08/06/books-about-books-are-fun/
I haven’t read the starting book, or any of the books you mentioned. We must travel in different book universes. Here’s my link

Great chain, as ever, Kate, and thanks for pointing me at Black Box which had somehow passed me by. Here’s my link:

Oh, so you’ll start next month with a SWEET TOOTH! Cool! Here’s mine https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2022/08/06/tcls-6degrees-of-separation-for-august-6-2022/
Hi Davida, I’ve been trying to comment on your page a couple of times last month and never succeeded. The box for the details would pop up for a thousandth of a second and then disappear. I would be told I need to log in and couldn’t. I’m sorry I’ve been so quiet, you had a few interesting posts that I wanted to comment on but it didn’t work. Sorry. I’ll try again and again but can’t promise anything.
I hope this goes through.
Great chain. And what an idea to start with our last book. I know exactly where I will be going with that one on my page. Thanks. Have a happy August.
My Six Degrees of Separation ended with The Pillars of the Earth Ken Follett.
You always have such interesting books in your chain! I love crosswords so I like the sound of Thinking Inside the Box.
Here’s mine: https://shereadsnovels.com/2022/08/06/six-degrees-of-separation-from-the-book-of-form-and-emptiness-to-elizabeth-and-her-german-garden/
I haven’t read any of your books (or heard of most of them) but the Ozeki gave me lots of ideas where to start. I went with the Book of Ruth: https://perfectretort.blogspot.com/2022/08/six-degrees-of-separation-from-book-of.html
I haven’t read any of your books or the start-up book, but that’s the fun of Six Degrees! Seeing all the great books out there.
So sorry I didn’t partake in Six Degrees over the last couple of months, where does the time fly to!!!
I did add my link, have a wonderful August.

Inanimate objects and other unusual narrators are the thread running through my chain this month https://thinkaboutreading.wordpress.com/2022/08/06/six-degrees-of-separation-from-the-book-of-form-and-emptiness-to-the-book-of-ramallah/
What an interesting chain, Kate. I always learn about books I’ve never heard of from all you bloggers who live in other parts of the world. (I’m in the U.S.) Thanks for hosting this monthly exercise. My entry is here: https://www.notesinthemargin.org/2022/08/06/6-degrees-of-separation-7/
WordPress is really acting up lately. No matter… I’ve seen this now. Maybe you can email me… My address is on my About Me page (or maybe my book reviewing policy page).
Nice links! I need to check this book on crosswords
