Sample Saturday – nonfiction picks

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye. This week, all three titles are ones I’ve come across during professional development.

What’s Your Type? by Merve Emre

Summary: the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, a personality test devised in the 1940s by a mother and daughter, both homemakers, that has achieved cult-like status. Despite the test’s widespread adoption, experts in the field of psychometric testing, a $500 million industry, struggle to account for its success – no less to validate its results.

I’m thinking: Yes.

We Need to Talk by Celeste Headlee

Summary: Today most of us communicate from behind electronic screens, which has resulted in the erosion of our conversational skills. Headlee outlines the strategies that have made her a better conversationalist.

I’m thinking: No, not convinced it offers anything new.

How to Hold a Grudge by Sophie Hannah

Summary: Comprehensive examination of the universal but widely misunderstood practice of grudge-holding.

I’m thinking: No (grudges are fascinating but this book is a little tricked-up).
