Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.
Mary Jane by Jessica Anya Blau
Why I have it: Enticed by Beck’s comparison with Curtis Sittenfeld’s style
Summary: Shy and bookish Mary Jane lands a summer job as a nanny in the home of a local psychiatrist, who is helping a famous rock star dry out. Mary Jane introduces her new household to crisply ironed clothes and a family dinner schedule, and they introduce her to a liberal world of sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll.
I’m thinking: Yes.
Last Evenings On Earth by Roberto Bolaño
Why I have it: Because the therapist in In Treatment was reading it.
Summary: Short stories focused on the theme of exile and quests.
I’m thinking: No.
We Play Ourselves by Jen Silverman
Why I have it: Because of Susan’s review.
Summary: After a humiliating scandal, a young writer flees to the West Coast to start over, where she is drawn into the morally-ambiguous orbit of a charismatic filmmaker and the teenage girls who are her next subjects.
I’m thinking: Yes.
Thanks for the link, Kate. Hope you enjoy the Silverman and I’m off to investigate Mary Jane (not a slang term from the ’50s!)
These all sound quite intriguing, I’ll be interested how you get on with them if you do go past the samples. I think Mary Jane would be my top choice!
Bolano would be a definite no for me purely because I dont get on well with short stories. The other two are not calling strongly either.
I’m glad Mary Jane made the cut 🙂
