Book (by a whisker). Because:
- Rakoff’s boss looms differently in the book – Sigourney Weaver’s brilliant and warmer-than-I-anticipated film character was a highlight.
- The inner lives of those sending fan mail to Salinger were described beautifully (didn’t love the way they were handled in the film).
- It’s a real New York story (the movie relied on NYC as a visual backdrop but therefore failed to capture Rakoff’s observations about the city).
All that said, I thoroughly enjoyed this film.
*I watched the film as part of Palace Cinemas excellent ‘rent at home’ scheme.
Still not read this! Both look very enticing though.
I really enjoyed both (I think you’d love the book for lots of reasons).
Well… I don’t know the book or the movie. Interesting, though.
Either will be an excellent use of time!
Thanks for this I haven’t heard of it!
I loved the book. The film is something I’d watch if I ever had the chance, like on a plane, but won’t seek out specially.
I saw the film, but have never seen the book around. I can imagine the book would be richer, but I’m glad you say the film was good, because I liked it. Some called it the literary equivalent of The devil wears Prada, but I thought it was much better, because it had more warmth.
