Sample Saturday – three from authors I’ve read before

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

This week all the books are from authors I’ve read (and enjoyed) previously –

A Life of Adventure and Delight by Akhil Sharma

Summary: Short stories about Indian protagonists at home and abroad, with a focus on love and relationships eg. a young woman in an arranged marriage awakens one day surprised to find herself in love with her husband.

I’m thinking: Maybe – love the style but the first story didn’t grab me.

The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson

Summary: What if society wasn’t fundamentally rational, but was motivated by insanity? Jon Ronson investigates.

I’m thinking: Yes – first chapter has not one, but two hooks.

The Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout

Summary: Haunted by the freak accident that killed their father, Jim and Bob Burgess escaped from their hometown in Maine for New York. They’re called home by their sister, Susan, who desperately needs their help. Family drama unfolds.

I’m thinking: Yes – how good is Strout’s dialogue between mothers and daughters?

  1. I’m a huge Strout fan & definitely need to read more of her work, having very much enjoyed Olive Kitteridge, Lucy Barton and its sequel. That one would definitely be a yes for me. 🙂

  2. I’ve heard a lot of pretty great things about The Psychopath Test. Definitely a potentially intriguing read.
