Sample Saturday – short stories and a classic

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

The End of the World is a Cul de Sac by Louise Kennedy

Why I have it:Because I loved Trespasses.

Summary: Sarah, abandoned by her partner, sits alone in their brand new house. Orla, facing the strange revenge of her husband, is forced to judge a contest in the local fête. Peter raises his daughter in rural seclusion, at what might as well be the end of the world.

I’m thinking: Yes.

Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson

Why I have it: Not sure.

Summary: The story of Ruth and her younger sister, Lucille, who grow up haphazardly, first under the care of their competent grandmother, then of two comically bumbling great-aunts, and finally of Sylvie, their eccentric and remote aunt.

I’m thinking: Maybe.

Swallowing Geography by Deborah Levy

Why I have it: Enjoyed Levy in the past.

Summary: Interrogates the yearning of discontented children, imagined homes, strangers and histories, as the century draws to an end.

I’m thinking: Yes.

    • I have generally been good at waiting until the end of the year to pick from my ‘yes’ samples but this year I seem to lack control, and I’m seeking them out as soon as possible – not doing much to help tackle the stacks of books I already own!

  1. Housekeeping is great, but it’s a slow book. it might need some time to develop, maybe the sample size was not representative. I hope you still give it a chance!
