Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.
The Woman on the Stairs by Bernhard Schlink
Why I have it: Spotted on Susan’s list. And I loved The Reader.
Summary: A missing painting. A mysterious woman. Her husband and her lover.
I’m thinking: Yes – I love an art-thriller.
Moloka’i by Alan Brennert
Why I have it: Spotted in Brona’s #6Degrees chain.
Summary: When marks appear on the skin of seven-year-old Hawaiian girl, Rachel, she is sent to the quarantined leprosy settlement on the island of Moloka’i. Here her life is supposed to end but instead she discovers it’s only the beginning.
I’m thinking: Maybe – although the style doesn’t grab me, the topic does.
What the Light Hides by Mette Jakobsen
Why I have it: No idea.
Summary: Vera and David have been passionately in love since the day they met more than twenty years ago. Their son, Ben, is at university. Or at least he was. The story begins five months after Ben’s death, an apparent suicide.
I’m thinking: Yes, even though it will make me cry.
I’d go for the Jakobsen as well as the Schlink, too. Thanks for the link, Kate.
Thanks for alerting me to the Schlink!
The Schlink really appeals – makes me wonder why I’ve only ever read The Reader by him!
Same! I do have a collection of his short stories somewhere… and I also have The Reader in German (clearly I was punching well above weight when I bought it because honestly, my German is not up to it!). Anyway, this one appeals because it’s an art-thriller.
I’ve wanted to read Moloka’i for so long. I hope you get to it. Me, too!
It’s certainly an enticing cover 🙂
I love the title ‘What The Light Hides’. I am adding it to my list. Thank you. 🙂
It’s intriguing, isn’t it?
Just seeing the cover takes me straight back to my honeymoon in Hawaii. I know the topic may not be the usual honeymoon reading matter, but I do like to read books set in the place I’m holidaying 😊
Ha! I’m the same – I have strong holiday/ book memories.
Moloka’i sounds great. I literally had heart palpitations when I looked at my TBR yesterday, but this might need to be added.
Suspect I’ll have similar palpitations when I check to see how BADLY I’ve done this year on reducing the TBR stack (I fear it’s hovering somewhere around the 350 mark…).
And yet I’m constantly amazed at the number of books you churn through!
I’ve had a copy of Molokai for about 10 years now. I still intend to read it! I think it sounds great — I just never end up in the mood to start it.
Ooooh I also loved The Reader. I had no idea he had something new out… and non-fiction. Will have to check it out.
