Bookish (and not so bookish) Thoughts

1.When I was little, my parents would always make me say hello to dinner guests in my jammies. #samebutdifferent

2. Also, I died of cute when I saw that pic.

3. And no one covered this story better than GQ

“Prince George—badass 2-year-old, knee sock enthusiast, and heir to the throne of England—pulled the ultimate power move today when meeting President Obama and First Lady Michelle. Instead of wearing one of his fetching little sweater vests, collared shirts, or knits, he decided to keep things casual. As in bathrobe casual.”

4. Began my first true audiobook yesterday (as opposed to using the fabulous text-to-speech function on my old Kindle) – I’m listening to The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan (and read by Flanagan).

5. My effort to listen to an audiobook was prompted by this excellent article about the Australian winner of the inaugural Sarah Lawrence College International Audio Fiction Awards (The Sarahs), Rijn Collins. The story behind Collins’s prize-winning story about taxidermy, flamingos and Tom Waits lullabies is great, as is her soundbite on audiobooks –

An awareness of how words sound instead of look is crucial.’

6. For the Sweet Valley High enthusiasts out there (and I know they exist), this article about what happens to the twins and their cohort in middle age.

7. For the record, that article was sent to me by a friend who I hadn’t seen in a while. We ran into each other at the local bakery last weekend and she said “I thought of you recently because I read this funny article about Sweet Valley High…”. It’s excellent that people know I have a deep and enduring love for the work of Francine Pascall.

8. I’ve had a weird switcharoo reading experience this week – read one book that everyone raved about and I thought was ordinary, and read another that I loved but that was canned on Goodreads (Penelope by Rebecca Harrington – review to come).

9. This tells you everything you need to know about my sense of humour:

    • There’s a whole collection of pictures (somewhere on the interwebs) of Obama and kids – there’s one that cracks me up because it’s a kid lying on the floor of the oval office (I suspect the kid had had enough and just lay down, as 3yos like to do!).

    • I actually have a hard copy as well so I guess I can always refer to it if needed (but so far, so good!). I decided to listen to it because I’ve had the hard copy for ages but haven’t felt all that keen to pick it up – thought the audio would be a good kick-start at the very least.

  1. Omg Prince George is just THE CUTEST. 😂 And go him for wearing what’s comfortable. #priorities Ahem. ;D Also I ADORE audiobooks!! They make me remember a book more (I think I’m an auditory learning tbh) and I doooo so like the sound of words as well as the reading of them.
BAHHA. THAT CHEESE THING THOUGH. That is thoroughly amusing. 😂

  2. I love that photo of Prince George meeting the President…he looks adorable in his robe.

Maybe I should try an audio book…just one! What could it hurt? I should break down and get an iPod…ha! I’m probably the only person on the planet who doesn’t have one. Then I could WALK more.

Enjoy your week…and here’s MY BOOKISH THURSDAY POST

  3. Kate, you are a great servant to your public. Without your guidance I would not have come across “Rush Oh!” . What a delight!

  4. Prince George does me in. Too much cuteness.

I very much appreciated the Sweet Valley High article. I’m still afraid of riding motorcycles and waking up in a coma.
