Nick Richardson, editor of Kitchen Table Memoirs, and I are in heated agreement – a house doesn’t really feel complete until the kitchen table is installed. My kitchen table – a honey-coloured Jarrah piece that comfortably seats eight (but can squeeze in 10 if you squash the littlies along the bench seat) – is where we eat breakfast and dinner everyday. I also study at the kitchen table; work there if I have something important or tricky to write; and sit there to read. I decided long ago not to be precious about the Jarrah – I’m not chopping vegetables on the tabletop but nor do I get my knickers in a twist if a bowl shunted from one end to the other is a bit scratchy. Six Degrees of Separation – from The Luminaries to Tony Hogan.
In 1929, Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy wrote a short story called Chains in which he coined the phrase six degrees of separation. Of course the 1993 film, Six Degrees of Separation, starring the incomparable Stockard Channing, cemented the phrase (and concept) into everyday parlance. Based on the concept of six degrees of separation, Emma Chapman and Annabel Smith created a neat meme, where bloggers share links between books, in six moves.
This month, the chain begins with The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton. I haven’t read it and my reason is pathetic – it’s just such a big book and I’ve done a few big books of late. That said, it is on my reading list (propping up the chunky end along with Harry Quebert). But the beauty of this meme is that having read the book is not a prerequisite. Continue reading
Bookish (and not so book bookish) Thoughts
Christine at Bookishly Boisterous started this meme – get amongst it.
1. I added more lists to my Best Books 2013 List of Lists. Most importantly, this list of the best cookbooks of 2013 from Gourmet Traveller. I’m adding Recipes for a Good Time by Elvis Abrahanowicz and Ben Milgate to my wish list, if only for the watermelon filled with punch (something I’m quite partial to). The GT top ten also includes The Breakfast Bible by Seb Emina and Malcolm Eggs – definitely one of my faves of the year because how can you not admire a BACON EMBOSSED COVER?! Continue reading
Book Week 2013
Today marked the finish of Book Week. Book Week at my kids’ school ends with a parade – everyone is invited to dress-up as their favourite book character and take part. The teachers are always in costume (it’s a serious business and I love that they dress-up).
Now I don’t want to ‘rain on the parade’ so to speak but I am a bit of Book Week purist. Characters more commonly associated with the screen? No. Star Wars and Toy Story? Sorry, no. I acknowledge that there are books about Star Wars and Toy Story but really, Darth Vader and Woody are in the movie business. Wizard of Oz – borderline.
I might be the only person on Twitter using the hashtag #BookWeektrends but I’ll give you a quick breakdown of this year’s parade. Continue reading
Top Ten Tuesday – TBR List
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week a new ‘top ten’ challenge is posted – anyone can join in. This week’s topic is Top Ten Books on My Summer TBR List. So although it’s not very summery in Melbourne at present (in fact, it’s darn cold), I still have a staggeringly long TBR list. Picking just ten will barely scrap the surface, but here it is: Continue reading
