Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.
This week, all three books (and all are novellas) were mentioned in this interview with author Austin Duffy (whose book, The Night Interns, I enjoyed).
A Meal in Winter by Hubert Mingarelli
Summary: Three German soldiers, dispatched to capture a Jewish man for execution, take shelter in an abandoned house, where they consider the moral implications of their murderous mission.
I’m thinking: Maybe.
The Days of Abandonment by Elena Ferrante
Summary: Story of a woman’s descent into devastating emptiness after being abandoned by her husband with two young children to care for.
I’m thinking: Yes.
Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor
Summary: The ‘witch’ is dead. And the discovery of her corpse – by a group of children playing near the irrigation canals – propels the whole village into an investigation of how and why this murder occurred.
I’m thinking: Yes.
Can I sway you towards A Meal in Winter with my review?

I don’t know whether to recommend Hurricane Season or not. The writing is beautiful and the story engrossing, but the brutality is horrendous.
Putting in a plea for the Mingarelli. Not an easy read but beautiful writing.
I’ve read the first two. Interesting that he mentioned all translated novellas!
I was very impressed with Hurricane Season although it is a difficult read at times.
