Sample Saturday – an actress, lockdown and friends

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

Sweet Fury by Sash Bischoff

Why I have it: Read something about the Fitzgerald Easter eggs.

Summary: When a beloved actress is cast in a feminist adaptation of a Fitzgerald classic, she finds herself the victim in a deadly game of revenge in which everyone, on screen and off, is playing a part.

I’m thinking: No.

Blue Ruin by Hari Kunzru

Why I have it: Spotted on Susan’s round-up.

Summary: Once, Jay was an artist, tipped for greatness. Now, undocumented in the US, he lives out of his car and makes a living delivering groceries in a wealthy area of upstate New York. The pandemic is still at its height when he arrives at an enormous house and finds the last person he ever expected to see –  Alice, a former lover from his art school days. Their relationship was tumultuous, ending when she ghosted him and left for America with his friend and fellow artist, Rob. In the twenty years since, their lives could not be more different.

I’m thinking: Yes.

Fun and Games by John Patrick McHugh

Why I have it: Sucked in by the Rooney testimonial.

Summary: Seventeen-year-old John has no idea what he wants. It’s his last summer on the small island where he has grown up and he should be enjoying the weeks until his exam results come through. Instead, he’s working mind-numbing shifts at the local hotel and trying to keep his head down after his mother’s nude sext to another man was leaked to the whole island. He embarks on a tentative relationship, knowing that soon he must make choices.

I’m thinking: No.

  1. I can’t help with any of these, sorry!
#AmusedGrin … “the Rooney Testimonial”, now that sounds like an excuse that could have many applications, ha ha

  2. We boomers (yes, I know you’re a generation younger) were the first to resume dating in large numbers when our kids were teenagers. Though sexting wasn’t a thing when I was in my 40s, thank goodness. I should read Fun and Games just to see what it looked like from the kids’ perspective. (And a Rooney endorsement is a plus, even if a 17 year old, just finished school is a bit obvious).
