Sample Saturday – a connection, a curse, and a family

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

Bonding by Mariel Franklin

Why I have it: Not sure.

Summary: Adrift in her early thirties, Mary sets out to change her life, one ill-advised decision at a time, beginning with a spontaneous flight to Ibiza.

I’m thinking: No.

Exhibit by R. O. Kwon

Why I have it: Have enjoyed Kwon’s books in the past.

Summary: At a lavish party, Jin Han meets Lidija Jung and nothing will ever be the same for either woman. A brilliant young photographer, Jin is at a crossroads in her work, in her marriage, and in who she wants to be. Lidija is an alluring, injured world-class ballerina on hiatus from her ballet company under mysterious circumstances. Drawn to each other by their intense artistic drives, the two women talk all night. Cracked open, Jin finds herself telling Lidija about an old familial curse.

I’m thinking: Yes.

Tehrangeles by Porochista Khakpour

Why I have it: Spotted on a ‘best of 2024′ list.

Summary: Iranian-American multimillionaires Ali and Homa Milani have it all—a McMansion in the hills of Los Angeles, a microwaveable snack empire, and four spirited daughters.  On the verge of landing their own reality TV show, the Milanis realize their deepest secrets are about to be dragged out into the open before the cameras even roll.

I’m thinking: Maybe.

  1. Well, well, Tehrangeles…
I have just got my library copy of The Persians, shortlisted for the Women’s Prize, and I didn’t get much past page 30. It is awful. Awful, awful, awful. Is it just a coincidence that it’s also about some very wealthy Iranians behaving badly?
