A tie!
I was engrossed by the book, which explored the precariousness of our modern Western lives. And Winn’s writing was beautiful – I always appreciate well-written descriptions of the sea and nature.
But in the film, you get to see the majesty of the South West Coast Path. Additionally, the flashbacks to provide the backstory were well done.
I keep meaning to read this – it sounds lovely. And the south west is gorgeous!
Do read it – it’s a wonderful book, not just for the nature writing but for the consideration of social issues that often get overlooked.
I had no idea there was a film! How flattering to Winn to have Gillian Anderson portray her 😉
Oddly, can’t find a trailer for the film anywhere! Gillian Anderson was terrific.
I just dithered over whether to see the film in the last week of the BFF. But somehow, without having read the book, I thought not.
What do you think?
Read the book first. The film is beautiful to watch but the book is thoughtful in a way that you just can’t do with dialogue on film.
That is so often the case, I know.
I loved this book, as you say it’s about much, much more than a walk but I had no idea there was a film and Gillian Anderson – wow!
In July 2025, an investigation published by the Observer revealed the truth about the book: the story presented in the book is mostly based on fraud and conceit.
Yes, and I was riveted as that was all unfolding – crazy stuff!
