It’s time for #6degrees. Start at the same place as other wonderful readers, add six books, and see where you end up.
This month we begin with Colm Tóibín’s Long Island.
I heard Tóibín speak about Long Island at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, where he was in conversation with Caoilinn Hughes, author of The Alternatives.
One of the themes in The Alternatives is climate change. I recently finished Doreen Cunningham’s sciencey-memoir, Soundings, where she looks at the impact of climate change on whale populations and migration patterns.
Charlotte McConaghy does the same, but with birds (Arctic Terns to be precise) in her novel Migrations.
There’s a reference to selkies in Migrations. Coincidentally, the novel I read immediately before Migrations – The Seven Skins of Esther Wilding by Holly Ringland – also referred to selkies.
Ringland’s book explores the idea that tattoos are part of our story. Indelible by Adelia Saunders is a novel about a woman who can ‘see’ writing on the body of everyone she meets.
Indelible has been sitting on my TBR list since 2017 (!). It sits alongside Edgar & Lucy by Victor Lodato. Will I ever get to either of these books… hopefully!
Neat that three of my choices were focused on Greenland, Faroe Islands, the Arctic. Where will other chains go? Link up below or post your link in the comments section.
Next month (November 2, 2024), we’ll start with Sally Rooney’s latest release, Intermezzo.
I was interested in McConaghy’s book when it came out, but never did get to read it. Your Indelible stopped me in my tracks for a moment because I was expecting a different author, but then I realised that that book was Indelible Ink (also about tattoos, and also one I was interested in when it came out but never have got to it).
Anyhow, I enjoyed your chain. I have yet to read Rooney and probably won’t get to Intermezzo but the title sounds like one that could go in many directions.

I haven’t read Long Island although I’ve read other books by Tóibín. I enjoyed your chain – all the books sound fascinating, especially Doreen Cunningham’s Soundings.

Thanks for hosting!
Another great chain. I love seeing where everyone’s thoughts take them.
Here’s mine for this month: https://portobellobookblog.com/2024/10/05/6degrees-of-separation-for-october-2024-from-long-island-by-colm-toibin-to-swimming-to-lundy-by-amanda-prowse/
I rarely seem to have read your interesting choices, but Soundings looks good, as does Migrations. Here’s mine: https://margaret21.com/2024/10/05/six-degrees-of-separation-from-long-island-to-a-girls-guide-to-winning-the-war/
Indelible sounds intriguing! Here’s my chain: https://alifeinbooks.co.uk/2024/10/six-degrees-of-separation-long-island-to-the-lodgers/
Oh… hm… I’m not even going to TRY to read the starter book. I truly disliked her bit hit Normal People, and couldn’t even watch the TV series they made from it. No matter… I’ll work something out. Here’s mine. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2024/10/05/tcls-6degrees-of-separation-for-october-5-2024/
I haven’t read Long Island yet, but I do want to as I enjoyed Brooklyn. Here’s my chain: https://shereadsnovels.com/2024/10/05/six-degrees-of-separation-from-long-island-to-the-white-devil/
Finally, I have read your starting book, ‘Long Island’! But that’s as far as it goes, because I haven’t read – indeed haven’t even heard of- the others. My chain is here:

I really enjoyed Migrations and The Seven Skins is on my TBR list. Here’s my chain http://clairesreadsandreviews.home.blog/2024/10/05/6degress-of-separation-7-october/
Thanks again for hosting, Kate. Here’s my list for this month: https://www.notesinthemargin.org/2024/10/05/6-degrees-of-separation-15/
Thanks for giving us the chance to look back at past reads. I always love it.
Here’s my list:

Great links!
I love Migrations! Have you read her next book? I haven’t yet, but am planning to.

I enjoyed Long Island, particularly how it starts off very abruptly and builds to even greater conflict, but it is the only one of yours I have read. Here is my chain:

Good chain!
Gave this a try and added one of your listed books to my TBR https://jhohadli.wordpress.com/2024/10/06/110510/
I’m not entirely sure whether I want to read Long Island, as I seem to remember liking Brooklyn when it first came out, but can’t remember all that much about it. I have to admit that all of the books in your chain are unknown to me. But at least I got my act together to produce my own 6 degrees post in reasonable time.
What a lovely post! I stumbled upon this randomly, and now I’m diving into all the connections. There are some
super amazing suggestions in this chain.
Welcome!
A terrific chain! Here is mine: https://tinyurl.com/y66ekm28
