It’s time for #6degrees. Start at the same place as other wonderful readers, add six books, and see where you end up.
This month we begin with Kitchen Confidential, Anthony Bourdain’s striking debut.
The last foodie-lit book that I read was Stanley Tucci’s memoir, Taste. Tucci recalls various important times in his life and how food played a role.
Similar is Luisa Weiss’s memoir, My Berlin Kitchen. Weiss has an Italian mother (who lived in Berlin) and an American father, who lived in Boston. Weiss was born in Germany, and like Tucci, she writes about significant memories and the recipes that go with them.
My next link is based on title alone – Berlin: Portrait of a City Through the Centuries by Rory MacLean. I have had this book in my TBR stack for eons – I must get to it!
Thinking of biographies in terms of cities, Richard Fidler’s comprehensive history of Prague, The Golden Maze, comes to mind.
Linking again on title, I jump to The Golden Bowl by Henry James. Despite having read much of James’s work, I know very little about his life. There are a few historical novels that cast James as a character, one of which I have in my reading stack – The Master by Colm Tóibín.
From cooking and cities to Henry James. Where will other chains go? Link up below or post your link in the comments section.
Next month (January 6, 2024), we’ll start with Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
I was hard pressed to think of ‘food’ titles! I seemed to get stuck in the 1950s instead. My response is here:

PS I loved The Master!
I’m interested in the two books focussed on Berlin. An interesting chain. Here’s mine: https://margaret21.com/2023/12/02/six-degrees-of-separation-from-kitchen-confidential-to-the-christmas-chronicles/
Oh… Toibin wrote a book about Henry James? I would like to read that one! Thanks again for this meme https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2023/12/02/tcls-6degrees-of-separation-for-december-2-2023/
Smart chain, as ever, with a nice Central European bent. Here’s mine: https://alifeinbooks.co.uk/2023/12/six-degrees-of-separation-kitchen-confidential-to-the-paper-palace/

I have a couple of titles with ‘Golden’ in them as well this time. Like you I’ve read some Henry James but know little about him.
My first time taking part! https://portobellobookblog.com/2023/12/02/6degrees-of-separation-december-2023-from-kitchen-confidential-to-the-little-paris-bookshop/
I loved Taste – such a fabulous read.
Loving the Berlin references. Preparing my own six links as we speak…
Stanley though… 🙂
The Golden Maze sounds interesting. Prague is such a beautiful city. Here’s my chain:

I have finally recently discovered Henry James, I’ll need to try this one too.
And oh my, I have red your last book!

Excellent chain–I especially like the leap to James as a character for a link! Great work! My Berlin Kitchen! It almost made my list–the recipes are even good. We really liked the meatballs the year the book came out (Christmas gift). I should make them again!
I also liked My Berlin Kitchen and I really enjoyed Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, although it made me cry!

Thank you for this starting point Kate – it allowed me to distil my culinary roots…

Thanks for this. As always, your chain is totally interesting. I probably could have done food related items but never had that idea. Still, it was a good start and my Six Degrees of Separation took me from Kitchen Confidential to When We Were Orphans by Kazuo Ishiguro.
