Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.
Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld
Summary: Sally Milz is a sketch writer for a live comedy show. When fellow writer, Danny Horst, begins dating an actress who guest-hosted the show, he joins the not-so-exclusive group of talented but average-looking men who’ve gotten romantically involved with incredibly beautiful and accomplished women. Sally channels her annoyance into a sketch and her own romantic life takes an unexpected turn.
I’m thinking: Yes.
In Love by Amy Bloom
Summary: When Amy Bloom’s husband, Brian, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, he decided to ‘die on his feet, not live on his knees’. Bloom’s memoir tracks their last journey together, to Dignitas, an organization based in Switzerland that empowers a person to end their own life with dignity and peace.
I’m thinking: Yes.
House of Glass by Hadley Freeman
Summary: Freeman investigates her grandmother’s secret history, uncovering a story in a shoe box that included photographs of her grandmother with a mysterious stranger, a cryptic telegram from the Red Cross, and a drawing signed by Picasso. The story spans a century, two World Wars, and three generations.
I’m thinking: Maybe.
I’d be amazed if you didn’t like In Love.
A definite yes to the Bloom. I’m halfway through the Sittenfeld now and really enjoying it. I tried the Freeman from the library but it was a little too involved for me.
