Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye. No idea why I have any of these.
The Good House by Ann Leary
Summary: How do you prove you’re not an alcoholic? Hildy Good, middle-aged and divorced, is taken aback when her adult children stage ‘an intervention’.
I’m thinking: No.
Subtle Bodies by Norman Rush
Summary: When Douglas, the ringleader of a clique of self-styled wits of ‘superior sensibility’ dies suddenly, his four remaining friends are summoned to his estate to memorialize his life.
I’m thinking: No.
Blue Boy by Rakesh Satyal
Summary: Kiran Sharma: lover of music, dance, and all things sensual; son of immigrants, social outcast, spiritual seeker. A boy who doesn’t quite understand his lot – until he realizes he’s a god.
I’m thinking: Yes.
I enjoyed the Leary but it’s fairly unremarkable. I don’t think you’ll be missing much if you drop it.
I had the Leary on my TBR, but I think I’ll give it a miss, too.
I’ve had the Leary on my TBR because it is set in New England and it got pretty good reviews, including one in the New York Times. Her husband is a minor actor from Massachusetts who is very involved in supporting firefighters.
