Sample Saturday – marriage, Princess Margaret, and a patriarch

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

The Lie of the Land by Amanda Craig

Why I have it: No idea.

Summary: Quentin and Lottie Bredin can’t afford to divorce. In order to stay afloat they leave London and move their children to a house in a remote part of Devon. They soon discover why their rent so low.

I’m thinking: Maybe – the black comedy about middle-class manners appeals but apparently there’s a murder mystery element (not my thing).

‘Few things are more painful than loathing and despising someone you have once loved and admired.’

Ma’am Darling: 99 Glimpses of Princess Margaret by Craig Brown

Why I have it: Reading inspired by The Crown.

Summary: Princess Margaret – to her friends, she was witty and regal. To her enemies, she was rude and demanding. A biography re-imagined, this book combines interviews, parodies, dreams, parallel lives, diaries, announcements, lists, catalogues and essays to show who Princess Margaret was.

I’m thinking: Yes – interesting format.

The Heirs by Susan Rieger

Why I have it: No idea.

Summary: An upper-crust Manhattan family comes undone after the death of their patriarch and the ensuing claim on his estate from an unknown woman.

I’m thinking: Maybe – I do like these kinds of family dramas but is it perhaps a little generic…?

    • Seems to be one of those books that doesn’t have people going for either one star or five stars, but rather mid-range. I’d prefer a book that divides – at least it’s memorable!

  1. I don’t download samples but I have a ton of books on my Kindle and rarely read anything in that format. I should try this approach. To remind me of what I have. I am read Les Miserables on the Kindle … slowly.

    • It’s a good way to sift through what you have and chuck whatever you’ll never read. I keep thinking if I’d bought all the books that caught my eye (instead of downloading samples), my TBR stack would be in the thousands!

  2. The Lie of the Land was our last book group read. When I read the back cover I groaned, and the first chapter didn’t enamour me to the central characters. However, I stuck with it and it turned out to be utterly brilliant. I’d definitely give it a shot!
