Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.
First Love by Gwendoline Riley
Why I have it: Spotted at Bookish Beck.
Summary: account of a volatile marriage between two catastrophically ill-suited people.
I’m thinking: Yes – the first chapter is unsettling.
Jean Harley Was Here by Heather Taylor Johnson
Why I have it: Spotted on this list.
Summary: Jean Harley is loved by all. Tragedy strikes. What becomes of the people she leaves behind?
I’m thinking: No (seems similar to too many other books at the moment).
The Choke by Sofie Laguna
Why I have it: I loved The Eye of the Sheep but didn’t get around to Laguna’s new release when it came out – Deb’s Best of 2017 list reminded me that I’d missed it.
Summary: Abandoned by her mother and only occasionally visited by her secretive father, Justine finds sanctuary in the narrows of the Murray River.
I’m thinking: Yes. Laguna writes from a child’s perspective extraordinarily well.
I love the idea of Sample Saturday! One thing I am grappling with at the moment is trying to keep track of how I come by any particular book – they seem to flood into my kindle/library list etc with such rapidity that I can’t keep up! How do you do it? Just diligent list-keeping or do you have other tips and techniques?
By all means, use the idea!
I’m actually not great at keeping track of how/why I acquire particular samples although I try to keep a bunch of ‘Sample Saturday’ posts in draft format and then, when I download a sample, I annotate a draft post with a link to where I read about it – not a perfect system though!
That’s a great start, thank you! 🙂
‘Unsettling’ fits the Riley very well.
Hope you ‘enjoy’ First Love!
I haven’t read First Love but I think Riley is a great writer, so that would get my vote. I hope it makes the cut so I can find out from your review if she’s on form!
Haven’t read anything by her but the start of this book is striking.
