Three ace Aussie picks in my November rewind –
2012: Ru by Kim Thúy – delicately told memoir about a family fleeing Vietnam for Canada.
2013: Barracuda by Christos Tsiolkas – a ripping read (and a fantastic mini-series to watch if you’re inclined).
2014: This House of Grief by Helen Garner – haunting.
2015: The Natural Way of Things by Charlotte Wood – an important and frightening book.
2016: Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf – a little bit heartbreaking.
2017: The Ice Storm by Rick Moody – the perfect urban-drama.
I’ve read your 15/16 choices, both absolutely brilliant. And in the case of The Natural Way of Things, absolutely terrifying.
Open the newspaper and we’re reminded with frightening regularity how The Natural Way of Things isn’t as ‘futuristic’ as people think. 🙁
Always delighted to see Kent Haruf on any list! I must get around to reading Ru – loved Man.
Ru still stays with me after all these years – she’s a very good writer.
For once our reading overlaps, I own ’13, read ’14 recently, and agree with you totally on ’15. As for ’16 – is a little bit heart breaking a bit like a little bit pregnant?
Something like that 😉
