Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.
The Night Watch by Sarah Waters
Why I have it: Because I just finished The Paying Guests.
Summary: Four Londoners, 1940s, air raids, blacked out streets, illicit liaisons.
I’m thinking: No, didn’t grab me.
Tin Man by Sarah Winman
Why I have it: Loved When God Was a Rabbit.
Summary: This is almost a love story. But then it’s not.
I’m thinking: Yes, yes, yes.
State of Wonder by Ann Patchett
Why I have it: Commonwealth was marvellous.
Summary: Dr Marina Singh hits the Amazon in order to find her colleague, Dr Swenson, who disappeared while working on a valuable new drug.
I’m thinking: Yes (…or should Bel Canto be next?!).
Usually I’ve never read any of your samples but this week I’ve excelled myself & read 2! I thought The Night Watch was great; State of Wonder I don’t think is Patchett at her best but still very readable.
Oh I loved When God Was a Rabbit as well! I have not read anything else by her but Tin Man sounds great. Adding it to my TBR!
I dont know State of Wonder but thought Bel Canto rivetting
I absolutely loved The Night Watch especially as it is a story told backwards so it’s clever as well!
I was disappointed by The Night Watch and also with The State of Wonder, I’m afraid. Wary of Tin Man, thanks to all the Twitter hype but lots of bloggers whose opinion I trust seem to like it so I’m coming round to it.
I loved When God Was a Rabbit too! Will look at Tin Man…sounds good. I really liked State of Wonder but that was before I read Commonwealth.
I’ve had The Night Watch on my shelf for ages (and Paying Guests too). I’ve loved some of her books, and do want to get to these two eventually.
I’m about to start State of Wonder. Though the sad state of my blog means I may never talk about it…
Perhaps do a bunch of ‘Twitter’ reviews (140 words or less) and then you’ll be up to date. Or easier still, just send me either a 👍 or a 👎 via Twitter and I’ll know whether to add it to the list.
Related, have you read Commonwealth? I think you’d like it.
