Bookish (and not so bookish) Thoughts

1. IT’S A NEW JOHN IRVING WEEK!

2. I’ve started Avenue of Mysteries (even though my reading is supposed to be focused exclusively on genes at present…).

3. Early thoughts on Avenue: enjoying the characters, worried about the lack of New England…

4. This is the only thing I like about Halloween.

5. There’s so much truth in this.

“A child does not walk onto a playground and say to herself, “How do I find fun?” She just goes and has fun.
If you have to look for what you enjoy in life, then you’re not going to enjoy anything. And the real truth is that you already enjoy something. You already enjoy many things. You’re just choosing to ignore them.”

6. This skirt made me laugh.

7. I think I need* a pair of sparkly shoes like this.

8. A new online gin store! Just in time for Christmas (meaning people can shop here for me).

9. It’s the 20th anniversary of the Bailey’s Women’s Prize for Fiction.

10. I thought I’d read lots of the Bailey’s prize winners – not sure where I got that idea because I have not (in fact, a woeful two of twenty).

  1. Oh my, I’ve only read 1 Baileys Prize winnner from that chart O_O (wait, correction, 2 if you include 2015) I should get on that…

Thanks for sharing that quote for #5, it’s something to remember/ponder about 🙂

Speaking of John Irving, I really should get around to his books. A Prayer to Owen Meany is still sitting on my TBR queue…

    • It’s weird because I always felt the Bailey’s winners were higher profile books… I was genuinely surprised I hadn’t read more of them.

Re Owen Meany – stop everything and read it! Truly one of his best.

  2. #4 – I agree.
    #6 – I want that skirt. I really do.
#7 – I have a pair of shoes almost like that (but about a tenth of the prize)! I’ve never worn them but when I saw them I couldn’t resist to buy them (you never know when you’ll need a pair of sparkly shoes).
    #10 – Sadly, I haven’t read any of these.

  3. Shoes: CUTE.
Irving: Have you read all his books? I kind of stopped around Widow, and there were gaps before that. Finished and liked Widow. Didn’t finish Twisted River.
Baileys: Have read four. Really recommend the Tremain of you haven’t read that one.

And I’ve decided that I’m “theming” my reading for 2016. Remember I said I’m only buying one book next year, my friend’s? Now I’ve decided I’m Reading India – all the books by Indian authors I’ve got already, also books set in India. Am excited. I plan to use a themed approach in an ongoing way. So Reading Africa, Reading Irving (so I cam fill my Irving gaps), Reading Proust, Reading Ulysses. It’s going to be great.
