Things That Are Making Me Happy This Week

01. So I probably haven’t shared the long and sad story of the demise of my book group… and I won’t now because of the title of this post. I also won’t go on about attempts to get a new group started… Instead, I was thrilled to be a part of Ramona Books inaugural book group this week. Such fun to have a really meaty discussion with people invested in talking about the book! (the book was Dominic Amerena’s I Want Everything).

02. MTC’s The Mother – described as ‘a play in five evictions’ – it was funny and sad, and Sigrid Thornton in the lead role was brilliant.

03. Watching: tried Adults (but ditched it after episode 2 – I’m not the target audience and it all felt a bit forced) and moved on to Wild, Wild Country (Netflix), the first on this list of documentaries about cults (sent to me by my friend after I asked if she had any good recommendations).

04. I know last week’s headline was a sandwich, but I had another outstanding one that deserves a mention (toasted sourdough with spanakopita, Swiss cheese, and a hint of honey from Hugo’s Deli).

05. A white shirt that’s plain but with clever details (specifically, the cinching bit at the side).

06. Listening: Chappel Roan’s new song, The Subway. When is she touring?!

07. The 2025 Booker Prize longlist – haven’t read any; own one (Audition by Katie Kitamura); want to read Love Forms by Claire Adam, The Rest of Our Lives by Ben Markovits, and Misinterpretation by Ledia Xhoga.

08. Remember the Readings voucher I discovered last week? Spent.

  1. Sandwich looks delicious!

I Want Everything sounds like a book for me but since it’s brand new AND Australian, God only knows when or if the Los Angeles Public Library system will ever have it. They only list one book by that author and I had to click the “notify me” button which means they don’t even have that one yet.

  2. 01, I’m truly sad about that because a great book group is truly special. I’ve never heard of Ramona’s. Is it near Westgarth cinema?

02, I’d love to see Sigurd Thornton

04, oh how i miss great sandwiches – your sandwich stories are deeply depressing to me (but keep them up)

05, do you find it hard spending vouchers? I often do but last time it was easy – two book group reads (Dunn’s Dirt poor islanders, and Castro’s China postman – is that the title?)

    • 01. I’m really hoping to create another great book group… but in the meantime, I’ll be enjoying Ramona’s. Ramona Books is relatively new and it’s a few doors up from Westgarth Cinema. The owner, Katie, has done a remarkable job of curating what’s on offer (basically I have read, and loved, the books on display OR I am busting to read them).
      02. She was outstanding.
      04. I treat myself to a sandwich every week – most often with a friend, and almost always after my hunger-inducing morning swim 🙂
      05. I have NO TROUBLE spending vouchers 😀
