Things That Are Making Me Happy This Week

01. A glorious weekend in Bendigo. The purpose of the trip was the Gallery’s Frida Kahlo exhibition, which was excellent. The focus was on her clothing and other personal items that were sealed in her home until 2004.

02. Needless to say, we ate well in Bendigo. Incredible dinner at Terrae (the beef was delicious but the highlight was the soft-centred chocolate pudding with a perfectly poached spiced pear).

03. And more on the food…  on our trip home we picked up bags of freshly picked new season Pink Lady apples, sourdough and other treats from the beautifully stocked Harcourt Produce Store (I really could have had one of everything); capocollo and cheese kranskys at Oakwood Small Goods in Castlemaine; and dinner for the family at the always-reliable Malmsbury Bakery.

04. Listening: new song, Unscarred, from one of my favourites, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, and Davina McCall from another fave, Wet Leg,

05. My local member, Dr. Monique Ryan, ran a forum on banning gambling advertising. I won’t get on my hobby-horse but it’s worth a watch and I urge people to sign the petition.

06. Cooking: Dirty Martini Chicken – was an excellent winter dish.

07. Decades ago, I loved Lush’s ‘Silky Underwear’ talc and then it disappeared. I have just discovered it’s back, and is as good as ever (although in a vastly smaller container).

08. My huge camelia tree is in full bloom and, thanks to busy possums each night, I wake to a carpet of driveway flowers.

  1. I was all set to see the Frida Kahlo too… my friend and I had booked dinner and a bed for the night at the new hotel where the Bank Restaurant used to be, and then I got what the doc thinks was RSV and was as sick as a dog for the best part of five weeks and couldn’t go. #NotHappy!

  2. Oh that’s a bummer. My comment just got lost with a message saying “notice verification failed”!

Basically I said that I love a good poached pear, but often don’t order it because I hate a poorly poached one. However, yesterday I did order one for lunch, served with zabaglione, and it was delicious albeit with a rustic presentation.

I must check how long that exhibition is going to be on.
