01. It’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival time! Saw Ray O’Leary, Bronwyn Kuss, Jake Lambert and Nath Valvo. Great laughs at all but new-to-me Jake was brilliant and Nath always has me in stitches (image).
02. Gimlets (and other delicious things, especially the duck parfait) at Gimlet.
03. Watched: joined the masses and watched Adolescence (Netflix). Distressing, but reminded me that A Mother’s Reckoning by Sue Klebold is on my TBR list.
04. Future things to watch: Movie version of Small Things Like These and TV series (Prime) of The Narrow Road to the Deep North.
05. Listening: Honey Lingers by Voice of the Beehive (the newly released remastered and expanded edition). This album was always a favourite and it’s still ace.
06. Cooking (or rather, mixing): tuna salad for sandwiches.
07. The German Film Festival program has been announced – top of my list is Riefenstahl; The Tasters; and Two to One.
08. I’m devoted to Baker’s Delight hot cross buns, however, Lune’s HCB cruffin was a delicious variation.
10. Upcoming Marimekko/Uniqlo collab.
11. The 2025 Stella Prize shortlist was announced this week. Devo that A Language of Limbs didn’t make it. The winner will be announced on May 23rd.
If you have a Woodfrog Bakery nearby, they are the tops in HCBs.
PS We are going to see The Tasters and Two to One as well, also (predictably) The Door to Door Bookstore, plus Munter & Kandinsky, and Hysteria. It’s a really good festival this year.
We have a Woodfrog 300m from home (dangerous!) – I like their HCBs but my first pick remains Bakers (I like their spice balance). That said, the chocolate babka at Woodfrog and their spelt loaf are SO GOOD and favourites at our house.
The German Film Festival looks really great this year. I probably won’t be able to get to as much as I ordinarily do because I’m about to go away, plus have the Writers Festival and Eurovision taking up my weekends – first world problems! (plus good problems to have). I have already seen Dying (it was part of the International Film Festival last year) – I loved it (funny in a very German way). Also on my list is Door to Door Bookstore, Munter & Kandinsky, Peacock and Fest & Freunde but unlikely I’ll manage all of those.
