Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye. This week, all three were spotted during my List of Lists 2024 research.
If Only by Vigdis Hjorth
Summary: A relatively young woman, married in her early twenties, had two children. It is winter. She has written in her diary that she is waiting for the heartbreak that will turn her into her true self. She has an impending sense of doom or possibly her own death.
I’m thinking: No.
My Lesbian Novel by Renee Gladman
Summary: Written as an interview that spans many years and weaves into and out of memory and fiction, the book chronicles the author’s project to explore the genre of lesbian romance as both a reader and a writer.
I’m thinking: No.
MILF by Paloma Faith
Summary: Can women have it all? What does it mean to be a woman and a mother in the modern age? Faith delves into the issues that face women today, from puberty and sexual awakenings, to battling through the expectations of patriarchy and the Supermum myth.
I’m thinking: No (although I loved the epigraph: ‘The world is not ready for free women’ – a text from my mum, 2024).
Sounds like a resounding “No” on all three.
I read a different Vigdis Hjorth – Long Live the Post Horn! – which was very interesting, and I enjoyed it.
Well that usefully struck 3 off your long list!
It did!
