04. The latest Uniqlo/ Marimekko collab (especially love the bags).
05. Excited to get a review copy of the new Taffy Brodesser-Akner novel.
06. Fancy hot chocolate at JC Patisserie Boulangerie.
07. Movie watching week:
- You Hurt My Feelings (Prime) – funny, especially the interactions between the sisters
- Mother’s Instinct (Prime) – disappointing, although the styling and costumes were superb
- Anatomy of a Fall (Stan) – not usually into suspense or courtroom dramas but this was good
08. Melbourne International Film Festival – first glimpse at program. Lots already on my list including Didi; My Favourite Cake; Queens of Concrete; Flathead; Occupied City; La Cocina; Menus-Plaisirs – Les Troisgros; and this doco about fungi (narrated by Björk!).
09. In our house, half of us are Blues, and half Bombers, so tonight was always going to be tense… Geez I love Carlton.
I’ve just read the new Colm Tóibín: my review is up on the blog tomorrow. I deferred it because of the news about Kim being a judge for the WA book awards.
If I could be in the audience and could ask a question, I’d want to know who was the inspiration for those two formidable matriarchs, especially the toxic one in the US!
I’ll be making an effort to read it before the author talk. I think there are options to submit questions prior to the talk – will see if I can put your question forward and report back!

Look at the colour of those violets! I almost watched You Hurt My Feelings the other night, must add it to the list.
The colour is so intense, and the scent is amazing (one little bunch fills my study).
Thanks for alerting me re: Edinburgh Book Fest. It hadn’t occurred to me that there would be events I could access online. I’ve signed up for two (Olivia Laing and Richard Holloway).
I think they’ve run a solid online programme since Covid. Some sessions are live (and not recorded), so the time zones differences are brutal between Scotland and Australia – tried that a couple of times and have since stuck to ones I can watch later, at a more civilised time!
Of course, I was wondering about the time zone, but then you reminded me that they do say for a short time after. What do you think is a reasonable amount to pay for attending such an event? I saw a Michael Ondaatje event which could be interesting too, though it’s about poetry.
