Sample Saturday – a girlfriend, a father, and a couple

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

The Answers by Catherine Lacey

Why I have it: appeared on this list.

Summary: Paralysed with pain, Mary seeks relief with a new-age treatment. Remarkably, it works but the treatment is prohibitively expensive so Mary takes a well-paying but strange job in the ‘Girlfriend Experiment’.

I’m thinking: Maybe – is it going to be one of those far-fetched thrillers?

Goodbye Vitamin by Rachel Khong

Why I have it: also on this list.

Summary: Ruth tries to forge a new relationship with the brilliant, childlike man her father has become.

I’m thinking: Yes.

New People by Danzy Senna

Why I have it: no idea.

Summary: Maria and Khalil, college sweethearts, are planning their wedding. But Maria can’t stop daydreaming about another man, a poet she barely knows. As fantasy escalates to fixation, it dredges up secrets from the past.

I’m thinking: No – writing is fine but not riveting.

  1. Goodbye, Vitamin was good fun. I’ve read two others by Lacey and enjoyed them, so I’d say she’s worth trying. I’m going to get another of hers from the library once it reopens.
