Sample Saturday – a family, many selves, and a summer house

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

You Belong Here by Laurie Steed

Why I have it: Melinda’s #6degrees chain for Tales of the City.

Summary: Jen and Steven meet at 16 and marry at 18. Next comes three children…and then where did their love go?

I’m thinking: Yes – love the retro details.

Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi

Why I have it: Spotted on Hannah’s list of her best books for 2018 so far.

Summary: Ada, a young Nigerian woman has a fractured sense of self – some of her selves are more powerful and controlling than others.

I’m thinking: No – started with magic realism and it’s not my thing.

The Summer House by Philip Teir

Why I have it: Susan’s enticing review.

Summary: Erik, Julia and their children, head to the west coast of Finland where they will spend the summer. It won’t be an idyllic holiday – Erik is hiding news that will shock his family and a friend from Julia’s childhood causes havoc.

I’m thinking: Yes – light but with feeling.
