Sample Saturday – a new start, a house, and estranged friends

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

Carousel Court by Joe McGinniss Jr.

Why I have it: Because it’s described as a modern Revolutionary Road.

Summary: Nick and Phoebe Maguire move states in search of a fresh start but it’s poorly timed and they hit an economic crisis. Their marriage becomes a blood sport.

I’m thinking: Maybe – all of the driving, drugs and frenzy in the first chapter was a little exhausting…

Weathering by Lucy Wood

Why I have it: Not sure.

Summary: Three generations of women in one house, by a river.

I’m thinking: No – writing style didn’t appeal.

Private Citizens by Tony Tulathimutte

Why I have it: Tried to get an ARC. Didn’t.

Summary: Privilege, ambition and friendship plus tech start-ups, gentrifiers, and cultish self-help seminars – a story of four college graduates in the noughties.

I’m thinking: Yes – perfect bit of snark.

  1. I’ve seen Carousel Court and Private Citizens frequently but your mention of snark makes me think I need to actually add Citizens to my TBR. 🙂
