Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.
This week, all three samples came from the 2016 list of lists.
Our Hearts Will Burn Us Down by Anne Valente
Summary: School shooting and its aftermath for four students.
I’m thinking: Coming-of-age with a school massacre? No thanks.
Sunday’s on the Phone to Monday by Christine Reilly
Summary: Claudio and Mathilde, once romantic bohemians, now just an ‘average’ couple dealing with life, work and their three daughters (one an overachieving prodigy; one sensitive, with a debilitating heart condition; and one adopted from China and quietly fixated on her true origins).
I’m thinking: Yes – it’s billed as The Middlesteins meets The Virgin Suicides.
The Little Red Chairs by Edna O’Brien
Summary: When a charismatic ‘faith healer’ arrives in a small Irish village, the community is soon under his spell. Particularly one woman…
I’m thinking: No.
I like the sound of the Reilly although lots of other bloggers have praised the O’Brien.
The Reilly sounds great! The other two don’t tempt me though.
Ugh… the cover of Hearts tempted me but school shootings? No thanks. Read about that enough in daily life. Hope Sunday’s on the Phone to Monday works for you. 🙂
Yes to Sunday’s on the phone to Monday. I tried the O’Brien but just couldn’t get along with it.
