01. There’s something extra-excellent about live music in smaller venues – The Buoys at The Corner last night. So good.
02. The Buoys were supported by Betty Taylor. Also brilliant (perfect blend of rock/ angry girls, with the lightest country touch).
03. A Streetcar Named Desire at MTC. Hadn’t seen this play for decades but as compelling as ever.
04. I don’t often buy new cookbooks but so much in The Farm Table by Julius Roberts screamed my name.
05. A huge week at the Melbourne International Film Festival –
- My Favourite Cake – bittersweet – many laughs but the lingering message was heartbreaking.
- Kneecap – wild. Suspect it will be my pick of the Festival. See it.
- Dying – billed as a ‘darkly comic portrait of Franzen-esque family dysfunction’, and that’s exactly what it was. A few horrifyingly memorable scenes.
- Matt and Mara – great dialogue but the character of Matt was so
full of himselfannoying. - Occupied City – detailed history of Amsterdam under Nazi occupation, layered over footage taken during COVID. At four hours long, it’s probably one for history fans.
06. …and a special ‘food and film’ event – My Favourite Cake paired with dinner at Cumulus Inc. where we enjoyed a vermouth and orange bitters cocktail; an octopus, pink fir potato and green olive entree; porterhouse with an outstanding roast celeriac & pumpkin gratin; and finished with chocolate torte, poached quince and crème fraîche. Delicious, delicious, delicious.
07. This TED talk by Susan Cain (author of Bittersweet) and Min Kym (author of Gone) about sad songs and rainy days.
08. My 75th spin class (that’s a lot of sweat and post-ride Lune visits).
09. Carlton keep September hopes alive…
10. My sons zipped down to Flinders on Monday night and caught the aurora.
