Things That Are Making Me Happy This Week

01. Going out for a sandwich is one of my favourite things – delicious fillings that I know I wouldn’t make at home (or I would, but then I’d be eating the same sandwich every day for a fortnight), and equally delicious breads (again, I just want two slices, not a whole loaf). I tend to go to the same places but for 2025 there is a new Sandwich Schedule – trying a new place, once a month, with a friend who understands good sandwiches.

First up, Warkop in Richmond. The advantage of going with a friend is sharing – we split the the Beef Brisket (toasted rye bread, with pickles and rendang sauce) and the Fried Chicken (which included shredded kohlrabi, pickles and tangy bazzinga sauce. I don’t know what’s in bazzinga sauce but it was next level delicious).

02. If you are planning to see Conclave, I urge you to see it on the big screen. Visually spectacular and quietly gripping.

03. Also saw the wonderful Swedish documentary, The Last Journey. (I saw it courtesy of MIFF, but it’s showing as part of the Europa Festival in a couple of weeks and I suspect it will be on again as part of MIFF later in the year). I laughed, I cried, and had #ALLTHEFEELINGS for each person in the film. Highly recommend.

04. I’m officially hitting the study books again (with a focus on dementia).

05. I visited a new-to-me bookshop this week – Ramona Books in Westgarth (it’s usually closed when I’m in the area). Talk about my perfect bookshop. Half of the books on display I’d read and loved. The other half I want to read. I think the buyer is my reading-perfect-match. Anyway, I picked up Garth Greenwell’s Small Rain and Kerstin Pilz’s memoir, Loving My Lying, Dying, Cheating Husband.

06.Watching: Better Things (SBS) – it’s making me LOL and there’s a bunch of seasons, so good viewing ahead.

07. Managed a walk this morning (and boiled eggs with parmesan at Cam’s Kiosk) before it was stupid-degrees-hot (for those in the northern hemisphere, we’re in the middle of a three day 39-40 degree heatwave).
