Things That Are Making Me Happy This Week

01. Julia at the Melbourne Theatre Company. There’s a reason why Justine Clarke has had standing ovations after every performance (we were cheering for Justine and Julia). Of course, the high point is the reenactment of Gillard’s misogyny speech.

02. Yay! The Buoys have launched their new album, Lustre. Faves so far: Check Mate; Unstuck and Guard My Heart.

03. Watched: Andrew McCarthy’s doco Brats (Disney). We enjoyed it, and had lots of laughs but not for the reasons we expected… Here’s the thing, was McCarthy ever in the Brat Pack*…?  In the doco, Mare Winningham describes herself as ‘Brat Pack adjunct’ and McCarthy rushes to confirm that yes, she was ‘adjunct’, and then awkwardly trails off, the thought that he might also be Brat-Pack-adjunct hanging in the air. So McCarthy trundles through these awkward interviews, making it all about him, and in doing so exposing the fact that the Brat Pack are probably all still hanging out together, but he’s not in the group chat. Anyways, the final scene is brilliant.

*This is the article that started it all. McCarthy gets a brief mention at the very end. I feel he is Brat-Pack-Adjunct.

04. Watching: Couples Therapy S3 (SBS) – constantly in awe of Orna Guralnik’s skill but her sessions with her supervisor are the best bit.

05. I love 60 Second docos on Insta, but especially their one on the Cloud Appreciation Society.

06. Fresh batch of acorns (collected when they had already sprouted, so we’ll see if I have any success).

07. The 2024 Melbourne International Film Festival launched this week. I spent a frenzied hour working out how I could squeeze in all that I wanted to see in the time that the Festival is on. On my list: Kneecap; La Cocina; Memoir of a Snail; Janet Planet; Dying; Daughters; Menus-Plaisirs – Les-Troisgros; Hoard; Matt & Mara; Occupied City; and My Favourite Cake.
