Book (by a whisker). Because:
- Rakoff’s boss looms differently in the book – Sigourney Weaver’s brilliant and warmer-than-I-anticipated film character was a highlight.
- The inner lives of those sending fan mail to Salinger were described beautifully (didn’t love the way they were handled in the film).
- It’s a real New York story (the movie relied on NYC as a visual backdrop but therefore failed to capture Rakoff’s observations about the city).
All that said, I thoroughly enjoyed this film.
