Bookish (and not so bookish) Thoughts

white-night-1

1. Last Sunday morning I woke my children up at 3.45am so that we could head into the city for White Night. It was worth it.

2. Especially because they went to bed really, really early on Sunday night, leaving me to watch War & Peace in peace…

3. If someone handed me $2530.80 today and said “You absolutely must spend $2530.80 on a handbag right now”, I’d buy this clutch from Edie Parker. Never have I known such deep bag lust as this.

4. My husband is a keen fisherman and particularly likes catching squid. However, he often loses squid jigs. When I discovered that jigs can cost up to $60 a pop, I went a little mental. I won’t bore you with the details of the discussion that followed, or my reasoning for the outcome but we agreed that at the end of the year I could buy a handbag equivalent to the cost of the lost jigs (as I said, don’t question the logic). So far, the tally is $280.

5. Which means my husband has to lose another 38 fancy jigs before Happy! is mine (highly unlikely – he’s quite good at catching squid).

6. Ferris Fest.

7. I saw the movie Brooklyn this week* (screenplay by Nick Hornby, adapted from Colm Toibin’s book). It was beautiful (and I’m not saying that just because I love a bit of Irish-misery-porn).

8. A friend sent me this article about ‘birthday words’. It’s fascinating to see how words reveal changes in cultural values and trends – ciao in 1929; blast-off in 1951; beat-box in 1988 and dad rock in 1994. Some words seem to have become part of the language much earlier than I would have imagined (back-to-nature in 1915; mobile phone in 1945), and others seem later (gasp in 1968; gobsmacked in 1985). Anyway, I’m glad my birthday word isn’t jeggings…

9. And a Twitter buddy sent me this article about The Complete Review. I loved it.

10. And lastly, but by no means least, everyone saw the pic below on Twitter, right? I. CAN’T. WAIT.
