Sample Saturday – families, essays, and a death

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

Cobble Hill by Cecily von Ziegesar

Why I have it: Because I really did enjoy Gossip Girl

Summary: a year in the life of four families in an upscale Brooklyn neighborhood, and the fallout after a raucous neighborhood party.

I’m thinking: Yes – can’t resist a possible Gossip-Girl-reimagined.

Wow, No Thank You by Samantha Irby

Why I have it: Appeared on the Best of 2020 list.

Summary: Essay collection about middle-age; being ‘friendzoned’ by Hollywood; and moving with her wife to a small town where she hosts book clubs and makes mason jar salads.

I’m thinking: Yes – funny, but not in a tiring way.

The New Sorrows of Young W. by Ulrich Plenzdorf

Why I have it: Recommended by Lizzy.

Summary: Edgar Wibeau has died in an accident. His father, who left the family when Edgard was five, interrogates those close to him, to find out what exactly happened – and who his son really was. Edgar himself punctuates the father’s conversations to give us his version of events from beyond the grave.

I’m thinking: Yes – interesting structure.
