Sample Saturday – a swim club, an octopus, and second-hand books

sample-saturday-4

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

The Three-Year Swim Club by Julie Checkoway

Why I have it: Read a review…somewhere.

Summary: Poverty-stricken kids learn to swim (with the aim of becoming Olympians).

I’m thinking: Yes, I do like a swimming story.

The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery

Why I have it: Read about it on Science Book a Day (and I read the post because I quite like octopuses).

Summary: A love story (between Sy and Athena the octopus) – hear the author speak here.

I’m thinking: Yes, it’s charming.

Second-Hand Stories by Josh Spero

Why I have it: It was on Scott’s Christmas List.

Summary: Second-hand books have two stories: one within the pages and another of the life lived before changing hands. Spero tracks down the previous owners of his second-hand books.

I’m thinking: Maybe – will the concept hold up over twelve chapters?
